Description
Shigaraki Ware (信楽焼): A Tradition of 1,260 Years
Shigaraki Ware (信楽焼) is a type of pottery produced in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県甲賀市信楽町). It is recognised as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (日本六古窯), with a history spanning over 1,260 years.
In 1976, it was officially designated as a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品) by the Japanese government, honouring its cultural and artistic significance.
The name へちもん (Hechimon) originates from a traditional term used by Shigaraki craftsmen, meaning “something unconventional”. Just as nature creates a variety of forms, and each of us has our own unique personality, these handcrafted ceramics showcase diverse and expressive designs.
Rather than being industrially manufactured, Hechimon pieces are more akin to agricultural produce—each one shaped with individuality. Skilled artisans, who deeply understand the beauty of imperfection, infuse their work with creativity and sincerity.
