Usaburo Creative Kokeshi Doll Large

$191.00

Description

Born in the Edo period, kokeshi dolls have long embodied wishes for well-being, prosperity, and children's growth. Today, they continue to carry blessings and encouragement, bringing happiness and peace to those we cherish.

A kokeshi doll can evoke memories—a gift from a loved one, a childhood keepsake, a reminder of family far away, or even of our past selves. Kokeshi is more than a doll; it is a connection, holding warm feelings that transcend time and space.

Usaburo Okamoto | First Generation

Founder of Usaburo Kokeshi, born in Shinto Village, Gunma, in 1917. He began making kokeshi dolls in 1950 and pioneered carving and baking techniques to add three-dimensional effects. He also developed methods to prevent wood from cracking, enabling the use of previously unsuitable materials. His masterpiece, Kantsubaki, was purchased by Emperor Shōwa. In 1979, he introduced mass production while preserving handcraftsmanship, making Usaburo Kokeshi Japan’s largest kokeshi producer. He remained active until his passing in July 2009, aged 91.

This is a classic Japanese style Bobbed hair kokeshi dolls.
The pattern of the kimono depicts the scenery of each season.
